EVENTS CELEBRATING 400 YEARS OF SHIPBUILDING IN MAINE

Throughout the summer of 2007, the 400th anniversary of shipbuilding in Maine will be commemorated and celebrated in many ways.  Click here to see a list, which will be updated as events are added. Come visit, join in and be a part of history!

            May 19—Christening of Aegis destroyer Sterett, DDG 104, Bath Iron Works, Washington Street, Bath at 11 A.M.  Open to the public beginning at 9 A.M.  FMI: .biwchristening@gdbiw.com

            May 19—Maine Maritime Museum: Half-price admission all day. (9:30 to 5) MMM is located at 243 Washington Street in Bath.

            May 19—Portland Press Herald at Maine Maritime Museum, 12 noon to 4, “A Legacy of Ships” project: An invitation to help tell the story of 400 years of shipbuilding in Maine.  If you have memories of shipbuilding, photos or memorabilia that you would like to share, journalists and others will be on hand at MMM to take notes or record oral histories and to transfer your photos to digital images.  Items may appear on their website, www.pressherald.com/shipbuilding or www.MaineToday.com, or in the newspaper series this summer.  In November, MMM will mount an exhibit using some of the materials gathered, along with items from its collection.

            May 26—Maine Maritime Museum: Opening of exhibit “Popham Colony: The First English Settlement in New England, 1607-1608” (Members’ preview, May 25, 5 to 7 P.M.)  Curated by archaeologist Dr. Jeffrey Phipps Brain, and created in cooperation with the Maine State Museum, the exhibit shares the findings of ten years of archaeology on the site of the English colony at Popham.  Through October 15.  FMI: www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            May 29—Bath Iron Works Trolley Tours, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30, and Saturdays at 10 A.M., from May 29 to October 7.  Departing from Maine Maritime Museum; can also be combined with a one-hour boat cruise on the Kennebec to see BIW from the river.  (Boat cruises do not begin until June 17).  FMI:  www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            May 31—Maine Maritime Museum: Popham Colony Lecture Series, 7 P.M. First of a series of lectures to be held on Thursdays June 28, July 26, August 30, and September 27.  “The Real Popham Colony: History vs. Archaeology”, Dr. Jeffrey Brain, leader of the archaelogical dig at Fort St. George, Popham.  FMI: www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            June 9—Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc.: House Tour in Bath’s North End Historic District, 10 A.M. to 3 P.M.  Visit historic homes of architectural note in the City of Ships.  Tour begins at the Winter Street Center, 880 Washington Street.  For pre-sale ticket information,  call (207) 443-2174 or go to www.sagadahocpreservation.org

            June 17—Maine Maritime Museum: Daily Boat Cruises at 12 noon and 2 P.M.  Through September 3, with a less frequent fall schedule from September 4 through October 8.  Learn about shipbuilding history and travel the river that has carried thousands of Bath-built ships to the sea.  FMI: www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            June 25—Maine Boatshop Tour: Richard Pulsifer, 1 P.M.: Dick Pulsifer, one of the premier Maine builders of traditional wooden boats, opens his shop for Maine Maritime Museum visitors to see how a Casco Bay Hampton is built.  Limited to 20, so best to register early!  FMI:  www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            June 25 & 26—Maine’s First Ship: Annual Early Maine History Workshop for Teachers.  Day One:  Presentations about, and field trips to, the Popham Colony site.  Day Two: Develop a classroom curriculum on the Popham Colony to be offered on-line.  FMI and registration: www.mainesfirstship.org

            June 27—Windjammer Days Cruise to Boothbay Harbor from Maine Maritime Museum, 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.  Revisit the days of wooden sailing ships as you view Maine’s famous windjammer fleet under sail.  FMI: www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            June 28—Maine Maritime Museum: Picnic in the Percy & Small Shipyard at MMM, 5 to 7.  (Also on July 12 & 26, and August 16 & 30)  Bring your family and friends, pack supper or buy a picnic there and enjoy an evening of themed crafts, games, activities and music along the banks of the Kennebec.  Theme tonight is the Popham Colony.  FMI: www.mainemaritimemuseum.org

            July 5—Phippsburg Historical Society Museum, Phippsburg Center: Exhibit opens on Popham history.  Open weekdays from 1 to 4 P.M. until Labor Day. Museum is located on Parker Head Road, just off Route 209.

            July 11—Maine Maritime Museum: Brown Bag Lecture Series, 12 noon.  Free lectures on maritime topics at noon on Wednesdays July 11, 18 & 25, and August 1 & 8.  Today’s talk: “Fiddler’s Reach: Arrowsic’s Dangerous Double Dogleg”, Michael Kreindler: tales and pictures of the navigational hazards and aids on this stretch of river with two opposed right-angle bends on the route from Bath’s shipyards to the sea.             August 8--Maine Maritime Museum: Brown Bag Lecture Series, 12 noon.  “Black Swan”, Christina Moore, author and sailor, shares her maritime experience and talks about her novel—a nautical journey of secrets, smuggling and murder.

            August 16—Maine Maritime Museum: Picnic in the Percy & Small Shipyard at MMM, 5 to 7.             August 18—S.S. John W. Brown Living History Cruise, 7 A.M. to 6 P.M.  Maine Maritime Museum offers a cruise aboard the last operational troop ship of World War II, a National Historic Ship.  Transportation from Bath to Portland harbor for a six-hour cruise with a live Big Band, military and historical re-enactors, flybys by WWII aircraft and meals.  Limited numbers, so register early!             August 19—S.S. John W. Brown Adventure, 11 A.M. to 5 P.M.   MMM offers a lecture by John Portela about John W. Brown, for whom the famous Liberty Ship was named.  A labor organizer with ties to Bath, Brown is buried in Woolwich.  Then travel to Portland to visit the ship for a self-guided tour of the last operational WWII troop ship, followed by a talk at the Portland Harbor Museum on the construction of a remarkable fleet of 244 Liberty Ships in South Portland by a consortium that included BIW.             September 27-- Maine Maritime Museum: Popham Lecture Series, 7 P.M.  “12,000 Years in Maine: Popham’s Place in Maine History”, Bruce Bourque, Assistant Director of the Maine State Museum, on how the Popham Colony fits into the multi-millenia history of the region.             October 15—Maine Maritime Museum: Exhibit “Popham Colony: The First English Settlement in New England, 1607-1608” closes.  It will re-open on November 10 at the Maine State Museum, Augusta.
