12 noon to 4, “A Legacy of Ships” project: An
invitation to help tell the story of 400 years of shipbuilding
in Maine. If you have memories of shipbuilding, photos
or memorabilia that you would like to share, journalists
and others will be on hand at MMM to take notes or record
oral histories and to transfer your photos to digital images. Items
may appear on their website, www.pressherald.com/shipbuilding or www.MaineToday.com,
or in the newspaper series this summer. In November,
MMM will mount an exhibit using some of the materials gathered,
along with items from its collection.

Colony: The First English Settlement in New England,
1607-1608” (Members’ preview,

aboard the last operational troop ship of World War II, a

19—S.S. John W. Brown Adventure,
11 A.M. to 5 P.M. MMM offers a lecture by John Portela about
John W. Brown, for whom the famous Liberty Ship was named. A
labor organizer with ties to Bath, Brown is buried in Woolwich. Then
travel to Portland to visit the ship for a self-guided tour
of the last operational WWII troop ship, followed by a talk
at the Portland Harbor Museum on the construction of a remarkable
fleet of 244 Liberty Ships in South Portland by a consortium
