BIW Print

Edward Sewall

Bath Waterfront
It has been a year since the four
Stilphen “Murals” were
installed in the Arch. Museum quality prints are now
available to the general public.
In 1991, Jim Stilphen, then a graphic
artist for Bath Iron Works, painted these four remarkable
paintings on 4x8’ plywood
to be gateway signs for the City of Bath. The “Arleigh
Burke” painting was at Witch Spring Hill; the “Edward
Sewall” painting was
on the lawn of the Custom’s House, and the “Bath
Waterfront” and
the “1991 map of Downtown Bath” paintings were
back to back in Waterfront Park. Weather was
not kind to the original frames, and they were taken down
and stored in BIW’s Dove House. When that building
faced demolition, SPI and Maine Maritime representatives
were invited to go over the contents. Tucked away in
the back room were the gateway signs.
Judy Barrington and Martha Mayo
moved the gateway signs to Winter Street Center. We came to call them murals. Several
years later, Tom Edwards led in their restoration. Fortunately,
an interview with Jim Stilphen was recorded and transcribed. Before
the murals were framed in Lexan, photographer Mike Leonard
of Yarmouth took high quality pictures of them. He
then spent hours editing his images. The result is
high definition images that can be ordered and printed locally
by Lynn Koenig at 122 Front Street.
The narrowness of the Arch and the
glare of a flash on the Lexan make it impossible to take a
quality picture of the murals now that they are installed. Don’t
despair! Order the print or prints of your choice from Main
Street Bath. 10" X 20” prints are $50 plus
tax. 20"X40” prints
are $125 plus tax. Any proceeds from sales of prints
will go toward expanding the “Arch Art Gallery.”
